Relaxing Watercolor Classes with Oren Jaffe
Join us for our relaxing watercolor workshops with Oren Jaffe.
In this workshop we will relax into the beautiful medium of watercolor. No prior skills required, just a positive attitude and desire to learn watercolor in a soothing garden environment!
Oren Jaffe earned his BFA in painting as well as a degree in Natural History at the University of Montana. Oren applies a sensitive and relaxing approach to painting in watercolors making this sometimes difficult medium a joyful and rewarding experience.
Oren’s loose approach to painting is beginner-friendly and in this workshop, we will cover choosing a subject, color-mixing, and brushstrokes.
Most importantly, you will learn how to enjoy watercolor and become a more confident maker.
These classes are designed to build upon one another and many of our students choose to make these Wednesday classes in our cozy secret garden a regular painting practice session.
So come on in and play in watercolor with us!
All supplies are provided by Leaf Quiet.
No prior skills are required - just a positive attitude and a desire to make art with plants!

Jazz of the Rails
University of Montana Jazz students continue to hone in their skills in this Music Lab hosted by Leaf and Quiet.
And now we are outside in the Secret Gardens off the Rails!
Serene Calligraphy Workshop
Experience Japanese calligraphy as it is traditionally taught in Japan—beginning with grinding your own sumi ink!
This two-hour workshop is led by Kei Nishino from Fukuoka, Japan. She has studied calligraphy since the age of four and is also a certified Assistant Instructor in the Urasenke tradition of Japanese tea ceremony.
You’ll begin by making your own sumi ink using a traditional ink stick and inkstone – a process that is slow and rhythmic in nature which many have found to be a deeply calming and meditative process.
After learning the fundamentals of Japanese calligraphy and practicing traditional brush techniques, you’ll choose one of five autumn-inspired kanji — Moon, Autumn, Fruitfulness, Wind, or Crimson —and create your own artwork.
No experience is needed, and all materials are included. Whether you’re interested in Japanese culture or simply looking for a creative experience, this class is for you.

Jazz of the Rails
Our Jazz off the Rails series is a weekly music lab where University of Montana Jazz students of all ages join together to play in our cozy and supportive environment, giving these students a taste of what it is like to perform in front of a live audience in an intimate jazz listening room environment.
Since we established this project in July 2024, we have watched incredible growth both in confidence and musicality in these students. All of them have accomplished so much showing up every Friday to perform. We have had high-school students join as well as teachers and professors, giving the audience a rare and wonderful treat while supporting the growth of our University music students.
